What is Yaupon?
Yaupon Holly or Ilex vomitoria is a medicinal evergreen shrub native only to the Southeastern US. Its historical use by indigenous peoples as a ritualistic beverage and stimulating tea goes back thousands of years in North American tradition.
Yaupon is one caffeinated plant in the holly genus Ilex, related to other popular caffeinated drinks like Yerba Mate, Guayusa, and Kudingcha. It contains not only caffeine, but theobromine and quercetin, which help to counteract the negative side affects of caffeine intake.
Additionally, studies show yaupon tea is packed full of brain, body, and immune boosting antioxidants, alkaloids, and flavanols that provide neuroprotective, anti-diabetic, anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, anti-cancer activity and more in humans!
