Background
Although most have never heard of it, the US has its very own source of caffeine. Here’s why we all need to start drinking it.
Its called Yaupon (yow-pon), and it was once considered sacred and consumed daily by the indigenous peoples and early settlers that used to live within its native range here in the southeastern US. Compared to coffee or green tea, it contains almost zero bitterness, at least 10x the antioxidants at a fraction of the carbon footprint, plus specialized molecules to help counteract the negative side-effects of caffeine intake.
More so, its ecological presence is now thought to provide a wide variety of important ecosystem services like improved water quality, soil health, carbon sequestration, and increased biodiversity thanks to its unique growth structure and high tolerance to environmental stressors.
Despite all this, it is largely considered a nuisance here in the southeast and is known to increase fire risk and decrease biodiversity when poorly managed. That’s why we at Yaupon Tea Co. aim to take advantage of this unique situation by incentivizing community-based ecological regeneration using yaupon holly by providing financial rewards and sustainable management solutions to our network of yaupon suppliers!
But how?!
Well, its radically simple.
- We help to properly I.D. known sources of native Yaupon Holly and examine its ecological significance (with the help of our partners and GIS habitat tool)
- If specific conditions are met, a sustainable yaupon management plan is created between Yaupon Tea Co. and the supplier, and the yaupon is then routinely monitored and harvested to maximize growth and positive ecological impact (Further utilizing GIS tool + verifiable ground-truthed data)
- Suppliers then receive continuous financial rewards based on the quantity/quality of yaupon they provide to Yaupon Tea Co. for sale + the value of the associated ecosystem services provided through sustainable Yaupon Holly management*
